"Gary was a man dedicated to the force and to victims and their families," Michelle Jarrett, aunt of Evelyn Greenup, said.
"He has a wealth of knowledge and commitment and he leaves no stone unturned, which is what victims need.
"I don't believe our case would have been as well known without the support of Gary and his team over the years.
"He never gave any promises except that he would always be there for us."
