NRMA patrolman gets shock of his life

Nambucca: carpet snake hijacks car

Is that a tiger in your tank or just a boa under your bonnet?

We are sure these were not the first words that went through the mind of NRMA Nambucca Heads patrolman Bruce Boorer when he attended this job at Newee Creek recently.

The call out was to a vehicle that wouldn’t start.

Imagine his surprise when he arrived to find this carpet snake perfectly comfortable, keeping warm and dry curled up around the engine.

He said, bizarrely, he had been to the property before and had seen a carpet snake on the wood pile then.

"I did ponder where the snake was when I arrived this time," Bruce said.

"And there is was right on the battery I needed to have access to.

"I went to find the owner of the car … and by the time we returned it had slithered away. Then I was thinking - hopefully not into my car!"

The snake did not show again and the car was easily started after that.

Tip: If your car is in a garage or carport, leaving the bonnet open at night will deter rodents and other creatures from moving in.
