“The response has been huge, we probably have about 40-50 people confirmed to be coming at the moment, it’s still early days though, with walk-ins and still a bit of time before the actual event we could get more,” Mr Colston said. 

“I’m trying to keep it simple; people can come down have a bite to eat, a few drinks, socialise, bring the kids. It’s a fun afternoon for the community; everyone is welcome.”

“We will be selling beer, drinks, steaks, salads, vegetarian options. There will be nibbles and chips over the bar as well. Everything we raise is going straight back into the club.” 

2019 has already been a busy one for Mr Colston who has been working flat out with sponsors and businesses in the community to get the ailing surf club building returned to former glory. 

“Donations from the community have been really generous, can’t thank everyone enough,” he said.

“The shutters are fixed, the outside railings have been replaced, the inside roof has been painted, the Tv is hooked up, ceiling fans are being put in, it’s all happening. At the moment the last phase is to get a deck for the front of the building overlooking the beach.”

“It’s basically out with the old and in with the new. We are getting rid of all the old broken down equipment and donating as much of it as we can to op shops. The club will be updated to a modern standard.” 

The surf club space can currently be hired out for birthdays, weddings and general events. The only restrictions are on 18th and 21st birthdays which can’t be held at the club at this stage. All bookings can be organised through Key to Coast Real Estate.

Aside from hiring out the club for private parties, the new president is looking to have ongoing public events for the community as well. 

On February 16 the Nambucca Rotary Clubs is planning a family fun night, there will be games, prizes, all you can eat food, and a variety of drinks at reasonable prices. 

“At this stage are looking at having a few public events, the plan to have the State of Origin here is still on track, and other ideas and events will most likely come up throughout the year,” Mr Colston said.  

“Down the track, we could get musicians, live bands playing, maybe local musicians from the community.”
