Moving from Sydney over 34 years ago, the husband and wife team brought their unique skills and started small, eventually going on to create the business we all know today.
Geoff had been planning the move for as long as he could remember.
“I’d been coming to the Nambucca area since I was a kid, and even then I would tell my parents I was going to live here one day," he said.
“Geoff was a Volvo mechanic; he had been working on fuel injected cars from day one,” Jan said.
“I had worked as a secretary, and for an airline. We made a good team all these years.”
The duo decided to retire with some regret; it was just the right time to hand off the business to new younger faces.
We are retiring due to good health
- Jan Goesch
“We are getting a bit old; we want to get out there and explore while we are still in good health, there is a whole world out there. Family in Sydney, grandkids in Brisbane, we will have plenty to keep us busy,” Jan said.
“We are retiring due to good health,” she added.
“The people were great; we were often asked how do we deal with the public so often, the public was fine, it was the cars that gave us all the trouble,” Geoff said.
“I just need to say that Jan was integral to the business, she did everything except work on the vehicles. She eventually got such a good working knowledge of everything she could sometimes diagnose car problems over the phone, couldn't have done this without her.”
While this is the end for his working life, Geoff is still willing to help his successor.
“I might be done working, but I won't just leave George like that, I'm still available to help, or if he needs advice.”
The last day of Geoff Goesch automotive was November 6th 2018, and it ended the way it started, with a Man called Alf.
“He was our first build job when we first opened all those years ago, and he was also our last. He was the last job of the day,” Geoff said.
“The hardest part of all of this is leaving our clients, not seeing them anymore, they've all become friends, some of them have been with us from the start, 20-30 plus years,” Jan added.
Now that they've left the business in the very capable hands of George Corbett, Geoff and Jan had a final message to the community.
“We just want to thank everyone in the community for all their support all these years, and for their faith, friendship and trust in us.”
