While club president Barry Jagoe wryly admits that maybe the ‘crusty’ bit could be somewhat warranted, the ‘bludger’ stereotype couldn’t be further from the truth.
The Scotts Head longboarding club routinely gives back to its community after its Malibu Classic competition, and has done since its inaugural comp nearly 40 years ago.
This year marked a hugely successful 34th staging of the annual event, in spite of the ludicrously tiny swell: “Small waves, big smiles became the running theme of the event,” Barry said.
And the perpetually friendly vibes of the Loggerheads’ Malibu Classic attracted some generous sponsors and a full entry card, leaving excess funds in the kitty which the club committee decided to donate to four worthwhile charities/community organisations.
Last week Barry handed over a cheque for $500 to Irene Rowsell and the Nambucca Valley Cancer Support Group, which will no doubt be put to good use in establishing their five-chair cancer treatment facility in the new Macksville Hospital.
Another $500 went to the Westpac Chopper crew, and a further $500 to the Macksville-Scotts Head Surf Lifesaving Club.
And after a particularly good year, the club wished to do their bit to help out those doing it tough over the ranges. A further $500 was given to Judy Ward at the Macksville Ex-Services for the drought relief drive.
“It feels good to be able to help out after having such a good time,” Barry said.
The club prides itself as being more of a social surfing club than one focussed on hard-core competition: “We’re just a big happy family really,” Barry said.
And there’s quite a few juniors and women in the ranks to bolster that claim.
But they’re hoping to attract some new blood for their upcoming season, which kicks off again in January and hosts monthly point-scoring comps.
“Anyone’s welcome. You don’t have to be a gun surfer – you can still be learning, as long as you’re willing to have some fun,” Barry said.
