There was no shortage of competitions again this past week - for some, a trip to the pro shop after the first nine holes to stock up on golf balls, though there was some great golf later in the week when players attacked the course for the Island Challenge and Monthly Medal stroke events.
Tuesday March 9 was a Medley Single Stableford with 50 starters and it was won by Kel McGoldrick (21 handicap) with 37 points on a countback from Dane Grabbe (13) from Kempsey. Other good scores were returned by Kevin Schuhmann (Coffs Harbour) and Michael Tarleton 36, Dean Riordan (Kempsey) 35, and Craig Haworth and Bradley Dyet (Kempsey) 34.
The ball rundown went to 30 on countback. NTPs went to Dean Riordan (Kempsey) for the long putt on 2, Graham Parker (Gosford) on 5, Colin Habgood (Kempsey) got the voucher on 8, John McAuliffe the voucher on 13, Dane Grabbe (Kempsey) got Stu's ball on 15, and John Moore collected on 18.
Wednesday March 10 was the deferred Women's Opening Day - most of the ladies found the course tough going, and few good scores were returned. It is fair to say that the camaraderie after the event soon compensated for any deflated egos from a hard day on the course.
Division 1 winner was Adrienne Smith (13) with 37 points from Cheryl Grinlinton (20) from Coffs Harbour with 32 points. In Division 2, Jenny Thorne (26) was the winner with 36 points from Gillian Anderson (27) with 31 points. In Division 3 Margot Gook (28) scored 35 points to win from Kay McGoldrick (29) with 31 points. Division 4 winner was Kerry Shearer (39) with 31 points and Morann Paterson (39) was runner-up with 30 points.
The ball rundown went to 27 on countback. NTPs went to Marilyn Scully on 5, Peta Giddey on 13, Joanne Habgood on 7, and Henny Oldenhove on 18. The accuracy drives went to Ruth Hall, Thea Kimber, Elaine Everitt and Rhonda Kirk.
Last Thursday was a Medley Single Stableford played in two divisions. Steve Frost (16) was the winner of Division 1 with 43 points from Tomm Lewis (18) with 41 points. In Division 2, Ray Baker (22) and Mark Blake (27) both scored 34 points, Ray winning on the countback.
Our general manager Johnathon Zirkler didn't let the stress of implementing our new Club Management System spoil a good round, scoring 39 points, while Ken Marriott, Anthony Smith and Colin Wormleaton all carded 37 points. The ball rundown went to 33 points on countback.
NTPs were won by Stuart Johnston for the longest putt on 2, Anthony Smith on 5, David Ogilvy on 7, Brad Fortescue (Macksville) on 8, Stuart Johnston took the voucher on 13, Paul Ryan got Stu's ball on 15, and David Mattacott won the pro pin jackpot of $60 on 18.
Friday was the monthly Haval Island Challenge with the course set up as the name suggests - challenging! The overall winner gets to test drive the Haval SUV for a whole day as part of the trophy prize. Rising to the occasion was Andrew Mackinnon (17) who had nett 69 to win from Brian Smith (18) from Carbrook on 70.
Scratch winner was Bruce Berry with 75. Matthew Ward (Macksville) and David Tawhara (Chinderah Tweed) also played well scoring nett 71 each. The best women's score came from Judy Boyle with 71 nett. NTPs for a sleeve of golf balls went to Rhonda Rowe on 5, Brian Smith on 7, Jennifer Johnston on 8, Judy Boyle on 18, and Dennis Ashton won the voucher on 13.
Saturday was the Men's Monthly Medal Stroke and first round of this year's Eclectic with a good field of 106 players keen to make the most of the good weather. In A Grade, Greg McCoy (3) continued his consistent good form to score 68 nett to win from Colin Wormleaton (11) on countback. Not surprisingly, and also playing great golf in recent times, was Bruce Berry taking the scratch with 72.
The shot of the day had to go to Bruce who also scored an elusive eagle on the 4th hole - a 459 metre par 5, holing out in three. This guy is playing some hot golf and deserves to raid the Eagles Nest for his dozen golf balls.
In B Grade, Rodney Robertson (17) scored 67 nett to win from Peter Moxon (18) with 69 nett. John Nebauer won the scratch with 85. C Grade winner was Joe Street (19) scoring 66 nett to win from Bernard Dugdale (24) on 67. Scratch winner was Andrew Bagust with 89.
The ball rundown went to 75 net on countback. NTPs went to Peter McCrohon (Highlands GC) for the longest putt on 2, Jake Hare on 5, David Elliott (Wingham) on 7, Jamie Lucas got the voucher on 8, Philip Mander got the voucher on 13, Rodney Robertson got Stu's ball on 15, and the pro pin jackpot $100 went to Les Mohr on 18.
Sunday was a much more laidback affair - a Mixed 4BBB Stableford. Winners were Kay and Kel McGoldrick with 41 points from Patronella McIlwain and Leslie Mohr. The ball rundown went to 38 points on countback. NTPs went to Linne Street on 5, Glenys Thompson won the pizza on 13, and Johnathon Ritchie and Judy Boyle collected on 18.
Meanwhile, the new Golf Management System has been installed. Members will no longer receive vouchers and golf balls for event trophies - these values will now be credited to each member's account.
Members will need to change their old passwords to access the new system and Member's Portal - contact the office or bar if you need assistance. Members seem pleased with the increased functionality available through the Members Portal - everything from tee bookings, handicap look-up, daily results and members' contact details.
Men's Eclectic and Top Gun Shootout - it's not too late to nominate for these events, entry fees can be paid at the pro shop on Saturdays.
Brian Burns Memorial Shield - this is a friendly interclub challenge in memory of our past 11 times champion, and to promote the camaraderie between Nambucca and Macksville golf clubs. We need more teams of two to play a Medley 4BBB game on Thursday March 25 Dolphin Day at Nambucca and on Saturday March 27 at Macksville. With 10 teams ready to go, Macksville already have a head start. Please nominate on the noticeboard.
A reminder that cards must be signed by both player and marker.
A Medley Single Stablefords will be played on Saturday - and this will be the first round for the Men's Top Gun qualifying.
See you on The Island!
