IT WAS great to get through the week at The Island Golf Course at Nambucca Heads without too much disruption from the afternoon thunderstorms.

We hope that all our visitors enjoyed their rounds and look forward to seeing you all again.
Last Tuesday was an Open Medley Single Stableford played in one division. Peter Brien (27 handicap) scored 39 points to win from Donald Wills (31) with 37 points. Other good rounds were carded by Andrew Donovan, Stephen Truelove and Donald Atkinson 36, and Keith Elphick 35.
The ball comp went down to 33 on countback.
Wednesday was Pattie's Play Day, when the women played a Canadian Foursome in memory of Pattie Hoshke, a well-loved member taken too early, sponsored by her good friends Gillian Anderson and Wendy Ritchie.
There were 48 players with visitors from Bellingen joining us to celebrate Pattie's love of golf.
Lyn Vidler and Denise Paluch won with 71.38 nett from runners-up Jennifer Johnston and Deb Gersbach 74.50, followed by Linda Piccin and Kerry Jackson 75.62. Ball run went to 78.62 nett.
The Canadian format was enjoyed by all, with fun and friendship the aim of the day.
Thursday was a Medley Single Stableford with a good field of exactly 100 players. The majority of the golfers were finished before the thunderstorm rolled through just after 2pm. Competition was tough, with numerous count-backs to decide the winners.
In Division 1 (scratch to 16) Geoffrey Harris (16) and Mark Schroder (15) from Belmont both scored 38 points, with club president Geoff winning on the countback. In Division 2 (17 to 22), David Mattacott (18) scored 40 points to win from William Mann (18) with 38 points.
It was another countback result in Division 3 (23 to 45) with Jeffrey Vanderwyk (23) and Neil Duffus (25) both scoring highly with 42 points each, Jeffrey winning the countback. Duffo's score was boosted by an incredible eagle on the 2nd hole - his third shot with a six iron dropped straight into the hole for six stableford points.
Other good scores unlucky not to make the winners' circle were carded by Keith Elphick and Colin Easey 40, Stephen Duff (Duntry League) and Andrew Donovan 38, and Graeme Bassam 37. The ball comp went down to 33 points on countback, with Chris Tinson getting that last ball.
Saturday saw a great field of 128 including numerous visitors for the Men's Monthly Medal Stroke sponsored by Nambucca Local Liquor, and the Medal of Medals play-off for the year.
Some of the winners during the week kept their good form going, and some incredibly good scores were returned. In A Grade (scratch to 12), Matt Clarke (12) from Bellingen carded nett 67 to win from Glen Hoade (7) from Port Macquarie with 68. Gregory McCoy won the scratch with 72.
In B Grade (13 to 18), Andrew McKinnon (18) scored nett 66 to win from Urpo Ylinen (17) with 69. Robert Coneybeare won the scratch with 82.
The best score of the day came from Rodney Commins (35) from Killara with nett 65 to win C Grade (19 to 45) from Neil Duffus (24) with 67. Scratch was won by Shane Redman from Maitland with 87. Other good scores were returned by Richard Trevena 67, David Wilson, Barrie Nicholson and Dale Hanson 68, and Colin Wormleaton, Steve Doherty, Robert Reid, Steve Frost and Leslie Mohr all with 69.
You needed better than 73 to collect a ball in the ball comp.
Medal of Medals winner was Neil Duffus - a great week of golf, Duffo!
This week's golf will see Medley Single Stableford events on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The ladies have a Monthly Medal Stroke and Medal of Medals play-off on Wednesday. And there is a 9 hole Chook Run on Friday.
There is no doubt that golf can be a dangerous sport, especially when you become a little bit carefree when handling your equipment!
This player (who shall remain nameless) thought it would be a good idea to give his golf buggy an unaccompanied push towards the 8th tee. Unfortunately, he did not allow for the contours at the back of the 7th green, and the free-wheeling front wheel followed the slope away from the intended destination - with all of his gear finishing in the water!
In an attempt to circumvent the impending tragedy, the player attempted to sprint with the speed of a startled gazelle only to fail, and cause some injury to his groin area that inhibited his ability to continue walking the course or even swing a club.
Little sympathy was forthcoming from his playing partners, who found much merriment in the whole event. We understand that the injury was not permanent, with self-medicating ice pack to the affected body part back in the comfort of home doing the trick.
A full recovery is expected, and we hope to see him back on course this week.
