The next Census will be held on August 10, 2021.
Census engagement managers will be working within communities telling people about the Census and ensuring everyone can take part and get the help they need.
Due to the close working relationship with community, 35 census engagement manager positions will only be open to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicants.
These roles are available across the country in all states and territories.
"Census Engagement Managers contribute to their communities," Darren Williams, a proud Wiradjuri man born in Wellington and engagement manager for the ABS' Centre of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics, said
"They aren't just about numbers, they empower their community in the use of Census data to help build and shape services."
Census data is used to assist in making decisions including transport, schools, healthcare, housing, infrastructure and business. It also helps plan support and services for individuals, families and communities.
"It is important to tell us your story by filling out the Census. The data helps us meet the needs of our diverse population groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and vulnerable population groups including people experiencing homelessness," Mr Williams said.
"For example, our data helps the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health plan medical clinics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Census data is also used to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have access to affordable and culturally appropriate community housing.
"Census data is a primary source for information on homelessness. Combined with local knowledge, it informs initiatives for housing solutions which provide safe, long-term accommodation for rough sleepers."
Census engagement managers will work with an established group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement managers from the Centre of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics.
"This is an opportunity to work with your networks and bring your community along on the journey.
"If you have strong engagement and communication skills and love interacting with your mob, apply now via the ABS website by 5 November," Mr Williams said.
Census engagement managers must have high level engagement and communication skills and experience working with diverse population groups.
