The first and ninth fairways are responding well to radical treatment and fertilising to improve the grass cover for the summer and will soon be back to normal.
Last Tuesday saw a Medley Single Stableford with almost 100 players taking part. Top score of the day was Kevin Mulhall (19 handicap) who had 40 points to win Division 1 (scratch to 19) from Colin Wormleaton (9) on 36 points. Tony Waugh (24) took out Division 2 (20 to 26) with 35 points from Sue Stuckey (25) from Sawtell with 33 points.
In Division 3 (27 to 45), Jon Winfer (27) from Bellingen won with 38 points from Alvin Rapley (28) with 36 points.
Other good scores were carded by Henny Oldenhove 36, Bruce Wallace (Coffs Harbour), Donald Atkinson and Rodney Kinnear (Kempsey) all with 35 points. The ball comp rundown went to 30 on a countback. The Vets winner was Bruce Wallace with Donald Atkinson runner-up, both with 35 points.
Wednesday saw five women competing in a Single Stableford. Eight visitors - from Nelson Bay, Trentham and Warringah clubs - enjoyed our island course with varying degrees of success.
Overall winner was Wendy Ritchie from B Grade with 39 stableford points from runner-up Patricia Hawkins (Nelson Bay) on 38. A Grade was won by Denise Paluch 37 from runner-up Donna Easey 36. C Grade winner was Lesley Buxton 37 and the runner-up was Lillian Lukins 36.
Two visitors from Nelson Bay, Gail Murray and Jean O'Reilly scored 33 points and were successful in the ball run, and 31 points were needed to collect.
A Medley Single Stableford on Thursday saw a good field of 90 players. Chris Thorndike (16) was the winner of Division 1 (scratch to 17) with 37 points from Darcy Habgood (0) on 36 points. A close tussle in Division 2 (18 to 24), saw John Hopkins (21) and Geoffrey McCann (18) both scoring 39 points, John winning on the countback.
In Division 3 (25 to 45), Russell White (35) scored 37 points to win from Gary Laing (25) on 35 points. Other good scores were had by William Mann, Leanne Welsh and Andrew McKinnon, all with 37 points. In the ball comp, you needed 32 points on a countback.
Saturday was this month's Monthly Medal Stroke, sponsored by Nambucca Local Liquor, with some great scores returned. Gregory McCoy (4) was the winner of the A Grade Medal with nett 68 from Stephen Carr (5) with nett 69.
Philip Mander (14) had a superb round of 63 nett to win B Grade from Rick Heywood (17) on nett 70.
Another great round saw David Rosser (21) score nett 64 to take out C Grade medal from Trevor Hopkins (21) with 65 nett. Gregory McCoy had the lowest off the stick 72 - good golfing, Greg. Highlight of Glen Crow's round was the elusive eagle he made on the 12th and he collects a dozen golf balls from the Eagles Nest.
Other good (nett) scores were posted by Ross Smith (Coffs Harbour) 65, Colin Dunne 66, Christopher Tinson and Andrew McKInnon 67, Hans Jansen 68, John Buganey and Bryan Ussher 69.
Sunday was a Two Person Mixed Ambrose, and a qualifying round for the Golf NSW Keno Two Person Ambrose Championship. Winners were Denise Paluch and Phillip Mander with a handicap of eight, scoring nett 62. Runners-up were Linne and Joe Street off 8.5 with nett 62.5.
Other good scores were had by Maureen Porter and Kevvy Williams 63.5, Glenys Thompson and Paul McElhinney 64.25, Henny and Urpo Ylinen 64.25 and Ruth Hall and Nick Jenkins 64.25. The ball comp went down to 65.25.
Golf on The Island this week sees Medley Single Stableford events on Tuesday and Thursday (the Open Dolphin Day sponsored by Nambucca RSL on the latter), and a 4BBB Stableford on Saturday (Ross Lang Day sponsored by Bush, Gaddes, Johnston and Ogilvy.
The ladies will play a Stroke Monthly Medal on Wednesday.
