Having received the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur from French President Emmanuel Macron two years ago, today (Tuesday) he was presented with the special 75th anniversary commemorative medallion the Department of Veterans Affairs created for living Second World War veterans.
The presentation took place at the Nambucca Heads cenotaph alongside the small gathering for Vietnam Veterans' Day with the Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan, doing the honours.
"Having read your biography I feel insignificant by comparison," Mr Conaghan said.
"We thank you for the service you gave both to the Mother Country and to our country ... we are what we are now because of you.
"I offer you the gratitude of my generation and the younger one and the Federal Government."
Sandy said the medal was a "lovely surprise".
"It is something very special, something most unexpected."
Still sprightly, Sandy continues to roll them over at the Bowling Club and says the loss of his driving licence is the biggest cloud on life's horizon just now.
But never you mind - he is busy convincing the doctor it should never have happened. Maybe we'll see him back in his canary yellow sports car yet!
