Unfortunately theft, bin fires, and damage from being knocked over results in the wheelie bin needing to be replaced at a cost to the council...and thus the ratepayer.
Local police have noticed there has been an increase in these offences across the Mid North Coast over the past six months.
As a means of prevention police are asking householders to hold off putting their wheelie bins out until the morning of collection.
With most waste collection starting from 6am, police are anticipating the majority of people won't have to get up any earlier to put their bins out.
"We are hoping this may stem the damage and theft that is occurring to wheelie bins across the Mid North Coast," Mid North Coast Crime Prevention Officer Steve Cherry said.
