IT FELT more like Melbourne weather during the week, cold and blustery one day, pouring rain the next, then fine weather by week's end - but Nambucca's golfers weathered it all in their quest for that rare good round at The Island course.

Another good field of over 80 players competed in our new Tuesday Medley Single Stableford, with the later players dodging the rain squalls that blew in from the ocean.
Greg McCoy (5 handicap) was untroubled by the conditions and had a great round of 39 points - very good golf off that handicap - to win Division 1 (scratch to 20) from Geoff Harris (15) who continues his good form of recent weeks with 35 points.
Michael Kevin (23) from Pennant Hills also did well to score 39 points to win Division 2 (21 to 45) from Shane Anderson (25) with 38 points - all that persistence and practice does pay off, Shane!
Then came the rains - 99ml of it on Wednesday - the ladies were unable to play, and by Thursday morning, many bunkers resembled swimming pools, and the fairways were somewhat spongey. With all bunkers declared GUR and preferred lies through the green, we managed to attract 52 hardy souls to tackle the course for The Golden Sands Tavern sponsored Medley Single Stableford.
Danial Fleming (19) had no trouble handling the conditions, scoring 39 points to win Division 1 (scratch to 20) from Steve Frost (13) on 37 points. Leslie Mohr (23) had a solid 38 points to win Division 2 (21 to 45) from Keith Elphick (21) who has been having a bit of good form lately with 37 points.
Other good scores were carded by Kel McGoldrick 36, Peter Fredericks and Col Wormleaton on 35, and Steve Doherty and Patrick Frost on 34. You needed 31 points on count back to get a ball, with Walter Bortoletto getting the last one.
On Friday, we played another round of the Island Challenge Series, sponsored by Kempsey Haval. Over 60 players tested themselves against the best The Island can throw at you.
Aaron Banks (11) from Bonville and David Mattacott (19) battled it out for the best nett with Aaron winning the countback, both scoring 68. Judy Boyle (25) had the best women's score with 73 nett. The only other person to play to their handicap or better was Greg McCoy (4) with a 69 nett to win a sleeve of golf balls.
Other good rounds were posted by Chris Tinson, Ben Honeybrook and Johnathon Zirkler 72 nett, We hope to have NTPs and Long Drives back by the next round on Friday July 10.
The Golden Sands Tavern also sponsored Saturday's Medley Single Stableford, with over 120 golfers taking part in much improved and drier course conditions. It's great to see so many visitors coming to play The Island course, and they ran away with the Division 1 (scratch to 16) trophies.
Brock Wilson (6) from Coffs Harbour had a great round of 39 points to win from Glen Hoade (7) from Port Macquarie close behind with 38 points. In Division 2 (17 to 23) Matt Allom (18) also scored 38 points to win from Andrew Johnston (20) with 37 points.
Ben Venner (36) won Division 3 (24 to 45) with 36 points from Gary Roach (26) with 35 points. Other good scores were carded by Greg McCoy and Robert Reid both 37, John Starr, William Mann and Trent Baade all on 36, and Jo Evans 35. Balls went way down to 30 points, with David Ogilvy scraping home for the last one.
There is plenty of golf on The Island this week with Medley Single Stableford competitions on Thursday and Saturday - and Nambucca Velley Care is this week's featured sponsor. Our Ladies competition continues on Wednesdays, and a 9-hole chook run on Friday afternoons.
See you on The Island!
