Just as Australia is finally allowed out of the house, Big Brother returns for another season of life in televised lockdown. Here's who's who in the human zoo. And, yes, host Sonia Kruger says to expect "some backstabbing".

From Broken Hill: tradie Mat (aged 30), who was born and bred in Broken Hill aka "God's Garden".

From Sydney: Allan (31), a Australian-born Chinese salesman; Chad (27) spent 10 years in construction before turning to modelling; Garth (50) came out at age 30 and later became a foster parent; makeup artist Marissa (62) did daily aerobics on morning TV with her twin sisters in the '80s as The Rancan Sisters; Xavier (23), paramedic and surfer.

From Perth: Angela (38), raised in the "Beverly Hills of Kenya", she moved to Australia without her parents when she was 17; Kalgoorlie-raised Casey (25) works in accounts but has a diploma in youth work; sporty Hannah (26) plays at the same AFL club as her brothers; waiter Ian (25), an only child, still takes hiking holidays with his geologist parents.

From Melbourne: Daniel (28), an ex-AFL player who now sells real estate; Laura (25) quit school at 17 to pursue dancing and now works as a professional choreographer; Sarah (19) is in the Australian Army cadets and studies criminal justice at uni; Zoe (39) is a high school woodwork teacher who moonlights as a mummy blogger.

From Townsville: Danni (34), married ex-hairdresser who had the first of her two children when she was just 18.

From Adelaide: Kieran (21) is a social media hit for his terrible attempts at learning to drive; Korean-born delivery driver SooBong (48) is a divorced father of three; Talia (22) works in construction and was a homeowner at 19.

From Tweed Heads: marriage celebrant Shane (39) presided over one of Australia's first legal gay marriages.

From Darwin: German-born Sophie (25, pictured) trained as a gymnast, moving to Canberra as a teen and then Brisbane. At 18, she made the 2012 Olympics team but a back injury forced her to retire two months before the Games.
