BUMPER fields were the order of the day all week at The Island Golf Course at Nambucca Heads - in a spell which saw great autumn weather, some run back on the fairways, good scores, and another hole-in-one.

The past week's events have all been Medley Single Stablefords, played in twos, and sponsored by one of our newest sponsors, North Coast Boating Centre of Urunga (you couldn't miss the Formosa SRT Boat and trailer on the first tee on Thursday - sorry everyone, it's not first prize, for display only!).
On Tuesday, Sue Brooks (12 handicap) won Division 1 (scratch to 21) with 40 points from Geoffrey Harris (17) with 39 points on countback from George Graham. Best score of the day was from Neil Duffus (24) with 42 points to win Division 2 (22 to 45) from Donald Atkinson (32) with 41 points.
Other good scores were returned by Richard Martin 39, and Raymond Bowering, Michael Broadfoot, Peter Dawe, Ronald Lapin, David Ogilvy, Patrick Post and Gary Tierney all with 37 points. Balls went down to 34 on countback.
Visiting from Urunga, Andrew Tosio (24) scored a hole-in-one on the 174 metre par three 7th. What makes this one even more incredible, I understand that it's his second ace in as many weeks. Some people are just plain skilful - or lucky?
Thursday's event was closely contested for the placings - Division 1 (scratch to 20) was cleaned up by Rodney Robertson (16) with a massive 43 points to win from Houston (Ray) Baker (20) with 38 points on countback from Geoffrey Harris (16) who had 22 points at the turn but ran out of puff on the back nine.
In Division 2 (21 to 45), Heather Gray (29) scored 40 points to win from dawn-buster Roy Louis (27) with 38 points on countback from Warren Coyne. Other good scores came from Scott Burley, Peter Miller and David Ogilvy with 37, and Bernard Dugdale, Mark Blake and Colin Dunne with 36 points. Balls went down to 33 points on a countback.
Saturday had a capacity field of over 100 players, with the going a bit more difficult into the southerly breeze.
A close tussle for the trophies in Division 1 (scratch to 16) saw Bruce Berry (5) edging out George Ruaporo (6) from Coffs Harbour with 37 points oncount back. Similarly, in Division 2 (17 to 23), John Morgan (18) won from Peter Thompson (17) on countback, both with 38 points.
In Division 3 (24 to 45) Gary Tierney (27) was a clear winner with 38 points, and Donna Easey (25) took the runner-up trophy with 36 points on a five-way countback from Rodney Ford, Thomas Robins, Geoffrey Wilson and John Buganey.
Other good scores were carded by Phillip Frost, Andrew Frawley, Johnathon Zirkler and Peter Bush, all with 36 points. To get a ball you needed 33 points on a countback.
There is plenty of golf on The Island this week - and we are back to playing in groups of four, subject to all the special rules in place for COVID-19 personal safety.
There will be Medley Single Stableford competitions on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with extended tee times available from 7am until 12.30pm on Thursday and Saturday. The ladies competition continues on Wednesdays, and there's a 9-hole chook run on Friday afternoons.
