The man was backing his canoe into the water under the Pacific Highway overpass along Scotts Head Rd when he lost control of the vehicle, which continued to roll into the water.
Local emergency services responded to the call just after lunch time.
When the Macksville Fire and Rescue crew arrived on scene they found the driver had already managed to exit his vehicle safely.
The fire crew stayed on scene to make sure no oil was spilled into the water.
The van was pulled from three-metre-deep water by Luke Pell Towing, with help from Fire and Rescue and SES personnel.
