PA chief executive Lynne Anderson says her staff have been allowed to opt-out of the trip to Tokyo and Kobe scheduled from March 20.

She says she receives daily updates about the virus and is in regular contact with the department of foreign affairs, Australian Institute of Sport and Australian Olympic Committee.

The Paralympics are due to begin on August 25, a month after the Olympics opens.

"For us, it's business as usual but obviously with an elevated layer of being prepared and being alert," Anderson told AAP on Thursday.

Five people have died and more than 850 people have contracted the respiratory disease in Japan.

With Prime Minister Shinzo Abe calling for sports and cultural events to be scrapped or curtailed, Japanese rugby on Wednesday postponed first division matches until March 14.

The country's top-flight baseball league will also play dozens of preseason games behind closed doors.

The International Paralympic Committee says it will follow the advice of global and national health authorities when it comes to contingencies.

"We have information coming from the IPC and International Olympic Committee and we're consolidating that in the one source and making sure we're on top of it as possible," Anderson said.

"But in the meantime in Australia, it's business as usual. We're confident of having the opening ceremony and medals to win."

With 180 days until the games, PA meanwhile hopes its revamped school program will promote the inclusion of people with a disability and challenge perceptions.

The program, launched on Thursday, will give students the chance to see what para-athletes can do, rather than what they can't, 100m sprinter Scott Reardon says.

"All of us have had to overcome things in life, achieving things in different ways," the single above-knee amputee and trainee teacher told AAP.

He said the program could also impact parents, who often try to be polite but end up just staring.

"(The kids) absorb information so well and love asking questions. One of the biggest barriers we have is when they want to ask questions but their parents say 'shh, you can't ask that'.

"If we can break the barriers at a school level so they know that a person with a disability is approachable, then the mum or dad don't have to stop them," Reardon said.

Wheelchair racer Eliza Ault-Connell often takes off her prosthetic legs to help kids understand "what looks quite foreign to them".

"By showing and letting them look and feel, it creates that acceptance and just normalises disability," she said.

"It also creates that bond and connection through sport because kids love sport."

PA hopes to para-athletes will share their knowledge with at least 500 kids during in-school visits and another 10,000 through free online materials.
