NAIDOC community grants opened this week to support events that celebrate Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements. Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said up to $3000 was available to fund events that focused on the importance of Aboriginal culture and its place in our community. "NAIDOC Week is an important time to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions Indigenous communities and their cultures make to our society and the NSW Government is proud to support this celebration," Ms Pavey said. The 2020 National NAIDOC Week will run from 5 - 12 July, focusing on the theme Always Was, Always Will Be, reflecting the importance of the land and culture that has forever been part of Australia's Indigenous culture. "We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to practice the world's oldest living cultures here in Australia and that makes us unique in the eyes of the world," Ms Pavey said. Eligible not-for-profit organisations in NSW can apply for grants of $500 to $1,000 to recognise their local Aboriginal community achievements, cultures, languages and identity. For more significant standalone events, which may involve a number of partners, grants of up to $3,000 are available. This year the NSW Government will trial online funding agreements for successful applicants to reduce the administrative burden on communities. Grant applications close Friday 24 April 2020.
