What a beautiful sight - 5500 mega litres of fresh water, which amounts to two years supply for our shire, even if not a drop of rain fell.

It is certainly a view that makes Nambucca Shire mayor, Rhonda Hoban, proud ... given making the case for the Bowra Dam was not an easy one 10 years ago when the shire was drowning in flood waters.
In December after months of dry weather, the Bowra Dam was called into action for the first time.
"When we built it and opened it, I wondered if I'd see the day when it became necessary to use the dam," the mayor mused.
"At the time, the urgency was not there ... but in December the river flow at the bore fields reached the 'cease pumping' level and the dam became the shire's water supply.
"Imagine if we didn't have it - we'd be in the same scenario as so many other towns right now."
In spite of the seeming abundance, Nambucca Shire declared Level One water restrictions in early December with a view to reducing useage by 10 per cent.
"We still need to use our water carefully - no-one knows how long this drought will last."
