The concept was initiated in 2013 by OneWave, a Bondi-based not for profit surfing community, as a way to 'highlight' the often invisible issue of mental illness.
The idea is simple, but simple ideas are often the best; a group of people will gather at the beach on a Friday wearing as brightly-coloured clothing as possible as a way to help start conversations around mental health issues.
Since 2013, over 200 similar events have been started at beaches all over the world, including one at Woolgoolga - an initiative which has already saved more than one life on the Coffs Coast.
Finally, the movement is coming to the Nambucca.
The 'tribe leaders' - Tracey Colston, Cass Wilson, Jess Thew and Meagan Flannigan - all felt a personal calling to start something in the Valley which helps break down the stigma surrounding mental illness, and alleviate social isolation.
They noticed a slight gap in the options available to people here, and wanted to introduce a casual, supportive atmosphere for people to chat with others about their troubles, or just make some new friends.
This Saturday, from 9.30am-12pm, the Valley's own fluro tribe will be out in force at Main Beach, Nambucca Heads.
The organisers are aware of the irony of holding a Fluro Friday launch on a Saturday, but have chosen to do so deliberately in order to allow more people to attend.
There'll be plenty to do, too, with beach volleyball and cricket games, beach yoga, Koori kids games, a free barbecue and free face-painting, a coffee van, and Kath - #aHippyChickWithAStick - will be making mandala magic.
The weekend's event will be a trial to see how people respond. There will be future Fridays, but the details are still fluid and will be based around what the community wants.
So if the idea appeals to you, then dress as much like a highlighter as you can and get yourself down to the beach this Saturday for some fun and friendship.
