After three years and much negotiating, Nambucca Shire councillors voted on August 15 to advise the Roads and Maritime Service (now known as Transport NSW) that the council accepts responsibility for the northern section of the Pacific Highway from Boggy Creek in the south to the shire's border with Bellingen Shire in the north.

Local roads such as Corkwood Rd, East West Rd and Deep Creek Rd, which were built during the highway construction process and have up until now been the responsibility of the RMS and the contractor, will now join this shire's transport asset portfolio.
They will be gazetted as public roads with an approximate 'fair value' of the assets set at $4.2 million with depreciation of $56,000.
The Assistant General Manager Engineering, Paul Gallagher, wrote in his report that a number of inspections of the roads had been done and requested remedial work completed by the contractor.
"The road pavements are at a suitable standard for council to accept ownership," Mr Gallagher said.
The General Manager Michael Coulter said staff had been chasing this for quite some time.
"The longer the finalisation of the Pacific Highway handover is left, other problems arise - we need to tidy this up, we need to settle the old highway," Mr Coulter said.
