First opened in the 1940s operating as a segregated theatre, eventually falling into disrepair until it was painstakingly restored by the local community and volunteers and reopened in 2003 - there is no doubt this building has a special place in the rich cultural fabric of the Nambucca Valley.
What many locals and visitors to the area don't realise, is the Bowraville Theatre is a not-for-profit venue and is completely operated and run by volunteers. The handful of volunteers who run the theatre are a dedicated group who want to see this community asset remain available to current and future generations of Australians.
Keeping the theatre operating and presenting great events costs money and the team at the Bowraville Theatre are seeking your help by coming along to an evening of entertainment and fun intended to raise funds in support of keeping the theatre alive.
On Friday, July 26 from 6pm until 8pm Bowraville Theatre will host a showcase of local talent, gourmet finger food, lucky door prizes and a few raffles thrown in for good measure, generously provided by generous local businesses. Those amazing folk from the Rotary Clubs of Macksville and Nambucca Heads have teamed up with the Bowraville Theatre to help make the night a success and will provide the catering.
Uncle Martin Ballangary will get the evening underway by leading a 'welcome dance' on behalf of the Gumbaynggirr people.
Then we will hear from the popular 'Michael the Living Poet' who will deliver his often humorous and always thought provoking verse. Michael will be followed by a group from the Bowraville Theatre Players who will take us back to a bygone era by reciting conversations in sonnets penned by William Shakespeare.
There will be time to mingle with other guests, the artists, meet the team of theatre volunteers, grab a bite to eat and take in the grandeur of the theatre before the second part of the show.
Then next are local singers/guitarists who are part of Dee Bee Bishop's Acoustic Club Scholarship Program, Dylan Mann and Ellesia James. This program provides a platform for aspiring young contemporary performers to learn from professional artists such as Dee Bee and gain that all important live performance experience. Both Dylan and Ellesia will perform as solo artists.
The evening will wrap up with local legend Rod Dowsett delivering his own brand of acoustic guitar and seasoned vocals. All of the artists appearing on the night are donating their time and talent in support of the theatre.
Doors open at 5:30pm, entry is $10 for adults and $5 for kids, with 100 percent of funds raised going towards providing more entertainment, performances and keeping the theatre a cultural community hub in the Nambucca Valley.
If you have ever considered volunteering at the theatre then this evening provides an opportunity to come along and see what it is all about. Please note that the evening is a BYO drinks event. Come along, bring your friends, bring your work mates, support your theatre and have a great night!
