Elizabeth married sawyer and mill worker William Henry Watts in 1909. In 1910 she gave birth to her first child, Merle. At the time there was no hospital at Macksville and when complications from the birth set in, Elizabeth was taken to hospital at Bowraville.

She was dangerously ill with septicemia and nearly died. Following her recovery the family moved to the South Coast where her husband was offered employment.

They moved from town to town following work for years but during this time all seven ensuing pregnancies did not bring about an increase in the family.

Elizabeth's experiences led her to take up nursing. The family returned to the Nambucca around 1924 and set up home at a farm called Elbow at Gumma.

Elizabeth trained at the Crown Street Women's Hospital in Sydney and at the age of thirty-eight graduated as a nurse. She set up a nursing hospital in Princess Street, Macksville but was often on the run delivering babies in the surrounding areas for both European and Aboriginal mothers.

In 1927 she bought a house at 12 Matilda Street, Macksville as a hospital and called it Miola. The hospital took in general and maternity cases and had many local doctors associated with it.

Her husband died in 1939 and Elizabeth continued running Miola as a maternity hospital during the Second World War.

Hundreds of babies have been born at Matilda Street Hospital.

The busiest they had were five in one night. Macksville had many citizens born at "Sister Watt's".

Elizabeth closed the hospital in 1951 and it re-opened as a girl's hostel. She died in 1986 at the age of 97 and is buried at Macksville Cemetery.
