Young scientists in the making
In class Year 12 Biology students are conducting in-depth studies on a chosen topic. For Elly Gooch that is conducting research on infectious disease, where she will investigate how macro parasites affect the condition of cattle. Her testing involves coat scoring, muscle/fat scoring and proving the presence of intestinal parasites via microscope work.

In her topic on earth and environmental science Elly must determine how slope effects landslide occurrence. To do this Elly conducted various experiments and visited Mt. Wollumbin (Mt Warning) near Tweed Heads investigating rainfall, gradients of Mt Wollumbin and the history of the area. Elly produced an outstanding journal, of which teacher Ms Mel Waters, was extremely proud.
Still on the topic of science, Year 12 Biology students visited Sydney for a three-day excursion exploring workshops on heredity, genetic change and infectious and non-infectious diseases.
Student Kawana Crowe said after heading down on the train overnight, students visited Randwick Children's Hospital where they attended a series of lectures on infectious and non-infectious diseases from professionals in their fields.
"After this we went to Circular Quay to see [the art installation] Vivid. This was an amazing experience and we took lots of photos of the art display," Kawana said.
"We attended the Museum of Human Disease run by UNSW, where we participated in two workshops, the first on heredity and infectious and non-Infectious diseases," Kawana said.
"This was extremely interesting and we were able to get lots of information from the displays and staff.
"Thanks to Miss Patu and Miss Lockyer for this an unforgettable trip!"
