Nambucca Shire Assistant General Manager Engineering Services, Paul Gallagher, said the council had upgraded high-use public toilet blocks over the past five years at Bellwood Park, Gordon Park and Shelly Beach in Nambucca Heads and South Valla Beach and Lions Reserve at Valla Beach at a cost of over $1.2 million.
"Council takes seriously its service of providing clean and safe public toilets in the valley," he said.
"Over the past eight to 10 years community surveys by council revealed people felt public toilets were important, however their satisfaction of the existing amenities was low.
"We have listened to the community's feedback and have built brand new toilet blocks at some of the valley's most popular parks, Bellwood Park and Gordon Park in Nambucca, and at Shelly Beach.
"The V-wall at Nambucca Heads, along with amenities in Winifred St, Macksville and Main St, Bowraville also received a significant upgrade.
Mr Gallagher said council now wants community feedback on five, aged amenities to determine whether continued maintenance is warranted.
The public toilets located at Fletcher St in Nambucca Heads, Grassy Park and McKay Park in Bowraville plus the coach stop in Macksville are being considered for closure and demolition.
Further, the public toilets near the Headland Museum at Nambucca Heads and those at Thompson St, Valla Beach adjacent to the tennis club, are proposed for transfer to those community organisations.
"Any reduction in service levels and savings from expenditure attributed to the maintenance, cleaning and repairs to vandalism of these facilities will be redirected into upgrades of other public amenities and assistance to the community groups", he said.
Residents are invited to make a written submission on the proposals to the General Manager, Nambucca Shire Council, PO Box 177, Macksville, 2447 by received by 4pm Thursday, July 11.
