Photographer Josh Woods was drawn to the climactic struggle after he heard a disturbance down by the river.
"I was down by the river, and I heard the thud of the pigeon hitting the water, then I heard the hawks," he said.
"They must have been juveniles because it looked like they were practicing their hunting techniques. You'd think an adult would have gotten the pigeon on the first try."
The mismatched battle lasted several minutes, until finally, the young predators grew tired of tormenting their helpless prey and ended the poor birds' ordeal.
"The pigeon tried to swim under the bridge, that saved him for a little while, looks like the hawks eventually got bored and went in for the kill," Josh said.
"One of them grabbed him by the wing and carried him away to the other side of the river."
There are stories and videos from all over the world of the fierce hunters attacking pigeons, and a few years ago in the UK; there was even talk of creating specific laws to protect pigeons from troublesome hawks.
