Local bellydancers will come together this Saturday, May 11 in South West Rocks to participate in a worldwide flashmob to raise awareness for domestic violence as well as raise funds for a Women's Refuge.

The flashmob will include dancers from Nambucca Heads, Maitland, Tamworth, Taree, Coffs Harbour, Gunnedah, Glen Innes as well as from Kempsey and South West Rocks.
On the same day, over 2300 dancers in nearly 200 locations across the world will dance the same dance in the same shirts to create the largest ever event of its kind.
Team leader of the local event, Julie Bendell from Essence of Ardour Bellydance in South West Rocks, said the event will raise money for locals who are impacted by domestic violence.
"Shimmy Mob is a worldwide event where ladies, bellydancers and non-bellydancers come together to bring awareness of domestic abuse," she said.
"This year, South West Rocks Shimmy Mob team will be raising money for Samaritans Womens Refuge in Kempsey."
The South West Rocks Shimmy Mob team is 43 dancers strong, with some being new dancers who will perform for the first time while others have been participating in the annual Shimmy Mob event since 2013.
As well as dancing on the day, the team are involved in fundraising activities prior, during and after the event.
All funds raised will be donated to Samaritans, who run the women's refuge in Kempsey and provide support services via The Community Hub.
Collections of toiletry and sanitary products are also being made.
