Nambucca Heads Fire and Rescue were called out to a property at Newee Creek yesterday to rescue a pregnant cow stuck in a septic tank.

"We received a call out for an animal rescue on a property at Newee Creek around 14:08," Fire and Rescue Nambucca Heads Deputy Captain Ricky Forbes told the Guardian.

"From what we can gather it happened mid-morning, the cow has walked over the concrete lid, and it has given way under the beast's heavy frame," he said.

"The owner had attempted to free the cow himself; he was unsuccessful, that's when we were called in."

Watch the dramatic rescue:

Despite the traumatic experience, the expectant mother was by all reports in good spirits as Fire and Rescue slowly raised her from the concrete prison.

"The whole operation from start to finish took about two-and-a-half hours; we had to borrow a tractor from a nearby farm and winch her out," Dep Capt Forbes said.

"We did our best to keep her calm, she ran away as soon as she was clear of the tank, the owner was going to get a vet to check her out, but she appeared to be okay.

"I've been doing this job for 15 years and this is definitely a first for me, I've never had to remove a cow from a septic tank before."
