NSW Junior State Age is an elite championship the Marlins strive to qualify for, preparation starts in October when the 50m pool opens, and the swimmers attend qualifying area meets all over the North Coast to achieve the set qualifying times for state.
Leah Pickvance competed in six events, and her best result was a bronze in the 12 years 50m butterfly. This was a fantastic swim by Leah as she has only recently turned 12 and entered this age bracket. She also achieved a top ten placing coming 9th in the 100m butterfly, along with a massive 7.82 second time improvement.
Fellow Marlin Cohen Welsh also had a six-race program over the two days and was ecstatic to win two silver medals for his efforts in the 11 years 50m backstroke and the 50m freestyle. He also took out a top 10 spot in the 100m backstroke coming in 6th. Cohen has been going from strength to strength this season and improving his Personal Bests (PB's) with almost every race.

Coach Renee Pickvance attended the meet and was on hand to warm the pair up before their events and remind them of their race plans.
"I was excited for them, they did some amazing PB's throughout the Championships and both of them picking up medals was very well deserved," she said.
Fellow coach Tony Kokegei was just as proud of his two swimmers "It is always very rewarding watching the swimmers achieve their goals, they have put the effort in over the season, and Renee and I are delighted that they have done so well," he said.
Leah and Cohen both train at Macksville Memorial Aquatic Centre under coaches Tony Kokegei and Renee Pickvance attending five to six squad sessions a week.
