Scotts Head has been in three out of the last four grand finals, after missing out last year, and losing the two previous years, the boys from Scotts finally got the big win they have spent the last six years chasing.
"It took a while to sink in that we had won, I'm so proud of the whole team, everyone has worked so hard to get here. We have a great side, with a great culture," team captain Tom Barber said.
"The club dates back maybe 20 years; it folded 12 years ago, then six years ago Jason Borthwick, Vanessa Barbour and Craig Mattick got it back on its feet, this is the final result of all their hard work."
Scotts Head finished the season undefeated, and going into the finals they would have been the favourites, however, the team captain insists that it was far from a sure-fire win.
"We went through the normal season undefeated, but we were still nervous heading into the grand final. If anyone were going to knock us off it would have been Nambucca Hotel; they are a great club," he said.
"They batted first, and even when it was our turn to bat the nerves didn't go away, they hadn't scored a huge amount of runs, given our history against them nothing was certain though, we had collapsed against them before."
"Our strength came from our players; we had more depth in our lineup, especially in the batting. We have been steadily getting better each year; I think this is the strongest side we have ever had. If we didn't win this year, it probably wouldn't ever happen."
Our side has developed a tremendous amount of respect for Nambucca Hotel, and we look forward to facing them again
- Tom Barber
Barber has been with the club since it started up again six years ago, and the victory was extra special for him and two others who have stuck around all these years.
"It has been a bit of a build up, myself and one other guy were the only ones that were there six years ago, Jason Borthwick was there too; however, he only played a few games, he was more of a coach and advisor this year," Barber said.
"Jason has been the heart and soul of the team for the last six years; it meant as much to him as anyone to finally get that win. He instilled the belief in us that we could win, he may not have played in the grand final but he was there to offer advice and cheer us on."
Now the season is over; Barber is turning his attention to next year when the Scotts Head Cricket Club will attempt to hold onto the title.
"We will have most of the same core group next season; there is a bit of pressure now to defend the title. I expect we will be competitive, nothing in sport is ever certain though, there are some good teams in the competition," he said.
"Our side has developed a tremendous amount of respect for Nambucca Hotel, and we look forward to facing them again."
