At about 1pm, the 71-year-old Gleniffer resident got into his car on Hyde Street, when a stranger opened the car door and began punching him numerous times.
A nearby witness notified police, who attended the scene, and the man drove himself to Bellingen Hospital to be treated for injuries to his face and arm.
A close friend of the elderly man has described him as “a very kind and gentle member of our community who has lived here for over 40 years”.
He said his friend did not know the man who attacked him, although the attacker claimed to know him.
The 71-year-old was transferred to Coffs Harbour hospital for further scans and released Monday morning.
Police said initial inquiries suggest the pair were not known to each other, and the assault was not targeted.
Inquiries are continuing.
