As one of the five NSW grant winners, they are set to help you improve your health, and maybe win $5000 for the community.
The Healthy Town Challenge is a joint initiative of the Heart Foundation and the NSW Office of Preventive Health and after a competitive selection process, the Nambucca Heads community now has six months and a grant of $15,000 to help bring the project spearheaded by the Roosters to fruition.
Peter did the paperwork for the grant, outlining a plan to install outdoor gym equipment for community use down at Coronation Park, along with organising regular training schedules.
And that’s where Daniel comes in – he’s just started his Certificate 3 in Fitness and Health to become a personal trainer and is keen to share what he learns.
“I’ve always played sport but not so much recently – now I have kids I want to set a good example to them and also help motivate others,” Daniel said.
“This is an opportunity for myself, but also the community – once the gym equipment arrives and I get into the program, I can be onsite here at Coronation Park as a volunteer to help people.”
Peter said Coronation Park was a great community facility that was under-utilised.
“We plan to install the gym equipment near the change rooms and will open the gates much more regularly,” Peter said.
“Then parents can come down here and train while their kids can run around and kick a footy … its win/win that gets everyone outside and moving.”
The Heart Foundation’s Heart Health Manager NSW, Scott Walsberger, said the Healthy Town Challenge highlighted the important role communities played in helping residents eat well, move more and sit less.
“The previous four challenges provided participating towns with fantastic opportunities to improve the health of their community, while also building community spirit and pride,” Mr Walsberger said.
“We are excited by the calibre and enthusiasm of this year’s challenge participants and cannot wait to see the results of their efforts later in the year.”
The other participants are Bowraville, Culcairn, Ulladulla, and Kyogle.
