President of the Nambucca Heads Branch John Eather and secretary Richard Greentree spoke to the Guardian about what the weekend will hold for them and the organisation.
“From 11 am there will be a service, and we will lay a wreath, Nashos are expected from all over Coffs Harbour, Grafton, it should be quite a turnout,” Mr Greentree said.
“We usually have it on the nearest Sunday, this year that falls on February 17. After the service, we will head on to the club for lunch and a few beers.” Mr Eather added.
The service will see the pipe and drum band providing entertainment, a number of special addresses and potentially the inclusion of some high profile guests.
“Luke Hartsyker is one of our main supporters, we invited him and Mayor Rhonda Hoban to be our guests for the service,” Mr Eather said.
The Nambucca Heads Nashos only date back to 2005, but the eager members of the branch have been devoted to serving the community since its inception.
“We have sausage sizzles two Saturdays a month, the first and third Saturday. We donate all the proceeds to the community,” Mr Greentree said
“The total lifetime amount we have donated would be over $26 thousand,” he added.
The pop-up barbecue has moved from the original location in the main street to the front of Woolworths; however, the food is still served with the same good humour and commitment that the community has come to expect from the Nashos, it even inspired one of the wives to write a poem.
“We have a good rapport with the community, we have one regular who likes their sausages very well done, almost charcoal, and another who likes to bring their own bread, we have a bit of a joke with them. Life is too short to be taken so seriously,” Nashos member George Wilson said.
