Codey Herrmann, 20, has been remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday following his arrest on Friday.
Ms Maasarwe, 21, had alighted a tram in Bundoora moments before she was attacked. Her body was found near a shopping centre about 7am on Wednesday.
Herrmann briefly appeared in a Melbourne court on Saturday in a green t-shirt and sat in the dock, flanked by guards, with his head hung.
He only looked up when the magistrate asked if he understood what he'd been charged with and he replied "yes".
Herrmann was arrested in north-suburban Greensborough but a police charge sheet states he has "nil fixed place of abode".
