Whispers are out there that German supermarket chain ALDI is coming to town, and planning to build on one of the industrial blocks right next to the Newville roundabout at Nambucca Heads.

Well, sorry to say, but it is simply not true.
Nambucca Shire Council’s General Manager, Michael Coulter, said while there had been some interest in both blocks, no serious offers had been made and definitely not one from ALDI.
“The truth is that even if they wanted to, the zoning there is not right for a supermarket,” Mr Coulter told the Guardian News.
Yes, we can hear the sighs of disappointment … for now it’s still a trip to Coffs to enjoy any of the vast array of well-priced treats they offer.
And on a personal note: This journalist remembers visiting the very first ALDI store back in 1980 in Schonnebeck, an industrial suburb of Essen, Germany. The concrete-floored space was down the road from my grandmother and was filled with stacked palettes of various goods. From memory, my uncle went there to buy beer and tinned vegetables and I bought some winter woolen stockings.
