Later police were actively looking for the vehicle, which was next spotted on Martells Rd heading onto Giinagay Way, south of Urunga.
Attempts to stop the vehicle were ignored by the driver, who continued south, reaching speeds of up to 125 kph, entering the Pacific Motorway at the Ballards Rd exit.
Pursuit was initiated by police and speeds of between 150 and 215 kph were reached. On arriving at the Nambucca Heads exit the driver veered onto the ramp, however due to the high speed, crashed into the railings.
The 22-year-old Toormina man then left the car on foot, running into nearby bush on the western side of the motorway. With the help of police dogs, he was later found hiding in the bush.
He was arrested and taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was charged with ‘take and drive conveyance’, police pursuit (Sky’s Law), disqualified driver and possess prohibited drug.
Apart from this incident Duty Officer Inspector Stuart Campbell said New Year celebrations in the Nambucca Shire thankfully resulted in no major incidents.
He thanked the community for their moderation and considerate behaviour.
