Nambucca Shire Council’s Clean Energy Commission proposed the idea for stations, adjacent to the Nambucca Library in Ridge Street, Nambucca Heads and also in Macksville’s McKay St, adjacent to the public amenities block, to the council earlier this year.
The proposal was accepted and a budget of $10,000 allocated.
The locations have been chosen due to their proximity to three-phase power available on a council meter.
One parking space would be allocated next to the charging station, which would have universal fittings suitable for all electric car models. Owners would need to use their own charging cables.
Project manager, Stephen Fowler, said the intention was to offer the service free of charge with the locations included on electric car websites.
“The attraction is that charging takes approximately 40 minutes, allowing adequate time for travellers to explore the nearby cafes and businesses,” Mr Fowler said.
“The down side is the loss of one car park in the CBD, but the advantages would outweigh that.”
Nambucca Heads and Valla Chamber of Commerce president Christian Knight said that while he could not speak on behalf of chamber as the matter had not yet been tabled, it seemed an excellent initiative for the town.
“I'd imagine that people with electric cars would need to carefully plan trips of any distance - so having a charging point at Nambucca Heads, which has now been bypassed, would inevitably draw travellers into town,” Mr Knight said.
"And it would be almost a given that people would look around the main street and shop while their car was charging."
