As part of RFS Get Ready activities across the Nambucca Valley and throughout the State, the Valla brigade threw the shed doors open and more than 50 local residents – the most in recent memory – headed along for a warm meet and greet.
All left with Bushfire Survival Plans and some tips on how to make them. There were hands-on hose activities for the youngsters, and advice to property owners was given on a basis tailored in some regards to their particular situation.
Special guest was Macksville Princess Annabelle Shelton who donated $500 to Valla brigade from her fundraising efforts associated with the Macksville Gift.
The brigade was particularly delighted to welcome a number of new arrivals to Valla from Sydney who have moved to the area in the past year.
As a result of the open day exercise, a few expressed interest in potentially joining the brigade, while the Get Ready greeting crowd at the station included three members from the Community Education unit in Cherylee (Newee Creek) and Rose and Cheryl (South West Rocks).
The bumper turnout put tongmaster Pat under the pump at the sausage sizzle – though there were just enough snags ‘fishes and loaves-style’ to ensure that everyone enjoyed lunch.
