Both Macksville High and Primary School students have now participated in drives to raise food and dollars for our farmers our west, with fantastic results.
In August, the high schoolers made the trek down to the Ex-Services Club to present a cheque for $1450 and a mountain of donated goodies to send out to the Doing It For Our Farmers collective.
And after only two weeks, the Primary students are proving themselves to be more than generous after raising five crates-worth of non-perishables for struggling farming families, with additional cash donations heading towards the Ex-Services’ ‘Buy A Bale’ drive.
Both schools house a large contingent of rural-living students who know only too well how hard farm-life can be.
And both cohorts of students know how lucky they are to be living this side of the ranges, where rainfall is a comparatively blessedly frequent occurrence.
So they were only too willing to help their brothers and sisters out west when their chance came.
Macksville Public’s new principal Anthony Buckley once taught at Narrabri and knows firsthand how tough life can be out there. So he is proud of the generosity his students have displayed over the past fortnight.
“I’ve just been out there recently for the 150 year anniversary. It’s pretty tough out there – it’s not looking flash. But they’re still remaining upbeat. The drought was the one thing that noone really mentioned at all. They’re a pretty positive community out there, they just get on with it really – and I see a lot of similarities in the Macksville community too,” he said.
