The new and exciting Australian comedy-drama, Ladies in Black, will start screening on September 20.
To celebrate its release, Majestic Cinemas Nambucca will be hosting a Girls’ Night Out from 6.30pm for some pre-show fun with our sponsors, and movie to start at 7pm along with the lucky door prizes.
Ladies in Black is based on the best selling novel Women in Black and is set in Sydney in 1959.
It was the era when women were gaining their liberation, social classes were being stuck down and Australia was starting to celebrate its cultural diversity.
The movies director, Bruce Beersford, is well remembered for his past movies Mao’s Last Dancer and Driving Miss Daisy, and once again, he has outdone himself. The fashion is fabulous, the era is correctly portrayed and the acting is superb.
Throughout the movie, the audience follows a number of different character stories, yet they all find themselves intertwined with each other.
Lisa (Angourie Rice) has just finished high school, and while she waits for her exam results, she work in a department store over the school holiday break and desperately tries to convince her father, Mr Miles (Shane Jacobson), she should go to university.
Faye (Rachel Taylor) is a young and independent lady who also works at the department store while she waits for her true love to ‘kiss her hand, and throw his coat over drains’.
Magda (Julia Ormond) and her husband are new migrants to Australia and are the social hot spots for new cuisine, fancy parties and fashion advice throughout the movie.
The majority of the movie is filmed in the department store, and if you happened to be in Sydney in 1959, you might just see some familiar items and designs.
In my opinion, it was just a plain and simple nice show to watch – nothing was over the top or excessively dramatised (except Magda, though she is just a drama queen – and a darn good one that), no course language and no unnecessary surprises.
