A history of our UHAs
Jalna Private Hospital was purchased in 1947 by the State Government and became a public hospital.
Sister Coulter’s Bowraville Hospital was also purchased and was known as the Bowraville Outpost Hospital.
Dr David Pope arrived arrived in 1946 and his wife, Margaret, was the first president of the Macksville UHA.
In the early years, mending sheets, rolling bandages, caring for the hospital library and, of course, visiting patients were the priorities of the UHA before fundraising for equipment was commenced.
Since the opening of the present Macksville Hospital in 1958, many women and a few men have continued to give many hours of their time to raise funds for the purchase of a great variety of equipment for the hospital.
The cafe opened in 2008 not only as a fundraiser but as an important community service to staff, patients and visitors.
Nambucca UHA has also been a generous contributor through bingo and other activities.
Presently, we are raising funds for the new hospital so that two birthing baths can be installed.
We need $32,000 by June 2019, and once that is in the bank our aim is to provide a similarly priced piece of equipment – a brand new defibrillator.
Macksville and Bowraville combined in 2017 to form the BowraMacksville UHA and we invite community members to join us to help in any way they can to raise funds to purchase equipment for this exciting and well-planned addition to our health services.
To celebrate our anniversary, we are holding a High Tea on September 22 at Macksville Ex-Services Club from 2pm.
We would like to invite all members of the community, including past and present volunteers and hospital staff to help us celebrate.
Entertainment includes the Bowraville Theatre Singers and a monologue by Helen Kirkpatrick.
There will be a trading table, raffles, the launch of the UHA Recipe Book no. 2 and a delicious afternoon tea.
Tickets cost $25, and can be purchased from the club. Tickets can now be purchased up until Thursday, September 20, for catering purposes.
