They were ideal conditions for the bear to come out and play, and they did in the form of Coneybeare brothers Richard and Robert who put together a score of 47 points. They did not have it all their own way as Paul Ryan and Trevor Hopkins had the same score, only to miss in the countback.
Picking up the third voucher was Terence Coelli and Roy Louis with a score of 45 points to pip Les Mohr and Paul Maxwell in a countback.
Others to show out were Brendan Graham and Phil Mander, Steve Cumming and Paddy Byrne, John Buganey and Michael Lee, and Geoff Wilson and Donny Wills all 44-point rounds. Ball rundown went to 41 with Geoff Poole and Eddy Penrose, John Nebauer and Dave Wilson and Chris Thorndike with Greg Smith all in the mix.
Pins went to Alvin Rapley at 3, Paul Maxwell at 5, Bruce Berry took 7, Denis Myer the 8th, Aart Hooykas took out the pizza at 13, Warren Fuller at 15, and as always Greg Smith collected – this time the money shot at the 18th.
Thursday’s round was a single stableford and there was a field of 82 starters with one of the visitors taking out A grade, in Doug Cheetham from Kempsey playing off a nine handicap. Doug scored 35 points. Next in the grade was ever present Phil Mander (10 handicap) with 34.
In B grade Paul Ryan (14) put in a score of 40 points. Must be the lesson from Paul Habgood that has made it all come to fruition. Denis Myer (Tocumwal) was the runner-up with a round of 36 playing off 14.
As always the scorers have to wait on the last group for all score cards and every now and then the winner is found here as it happened on the day with Mark Blake (26) 40 points to win C grade from Peter Dawe (24) who had the leaderboard to himself for most of the day after a score of 39.
Ball rundown went to 30 with just Bernard Dugdale to collect. Adding to his win Paul Ryan picked up nearest the pins at the third and the eighth as well taking out the longest putt on the second hole. Frank Taylor took the 5th, Ken Marriott picked up the 7th and money shot at 18, not very generous as he took my name off the marker. Our 13th hole went to Hans Jansen, and Peter Moxon the 15th.
A good field for a windy Sunday with an Irish Team event where all have a chance to contribute in the game. Winning Team was the Fullers and Buganeys with a round of 76 points, just getting the countback from the Taylors and O’Briens.Third place went to the Rees and Barnetts with 73 points. Also starring were Robyn Jones and Trevor Peck along with Glenys Thompson and Shane Anderson 72 points.
Pins went to Garnie O’Brien, Lyn Grose, Urpo Ylinen and Nicole Purcer. All enjoyed an afternoon snack in the club house with thanks to sponsor Heather Gray and the helpers McGoldricks, Dedrie Byrne and Greg Smith all on deck to serve.
This weekend is the Island Classic over 36 holes with ladies and men’s competitions. Stableford and gross events are on offer with good sponsorship provided by Mid North Coast Trucks and the Miramar Motel.
