It might not have had the fanfare of ANZAC Day but for the 80 or so who gathered in Stuarts Point on Saturday for the Nambucca Valley Vietnam Veterans Day Commemoration Service, it was a special day nonetheless.

President of the Stuarts Point RSL sub-branch, Wayne Mason, said it was a beautiful sunny day, that offered all-important camaraderie by way of the service followed by a lunch.
“It was all pretty casual but quite a few of the blokes have emailed me and said it was appreciated,” Wayne said.
“There was a lot of angst about the Vietnam War for many years and many servicemen avoided the RSL and such events, but that has changed now.
“When I returned from Vietnam, we flew into Mascot late at night and were hustled out the back door to avoid demonstrations – not quite the homecoming you really expect.
“I’ve been here in Stuarts Point for 24 years and president of the sub-branch for 23 of them … it’s a good way to give back and help others.”
