Established in 1997, National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge.
It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public, and to encourage younger people to be fascinated by the world we live in.
Nambucca Valley Christian Community School is getting on board with the week’s festivities by running special science discovery lessons for its primary school classes.
Each grade partook in a tailor-made lesson in the high school science labs, with senior students at the ready to guide the young scientific minds.
On top of introducing the primary school students to the building blocks of the scientific method, the lessons enabled them to get hands-on with some of the equipment they’ll be using in a few years’ time.
The Kinders had a lesson in sensory perception, with classic blind-folded sniff tests. All were successfully able to to identify the scent of banana and orange. And in spite of their tender years, many were able to identify white vinegar.
The lesson ended in a chemistry experiment where kids learnt what happens when vinegar and bi-carb soda is mixed together.
While the year one class got to see sound and play with light.
All the budding young scientists said they thoroughly enjoyed their lesson and are excited to learn more about their world through the magic of scientific discovery.
