The hospital has had several names over the years. It was called the Macksville Memorial Hospital when tenders closed for the erection of it in 1950. A local gentleman who passed away 15 years prior to that had left money in his will for a new hospital in Macksville.
Several Macksville businessmen donated large amounts to help the cause and conducted fundraising activities to help with the project. With government help, the hospital and two adjoining buildings within the grounds were built at a cost of 250,000 pounds.
The hospital opened about late 1958 but by December 1959 the name had changed to Macksville & District Hospital.
The name once more changed to Nambucca & District Hospital.
I believe there was a problem with deliveries of all kinds ending up in Nambucca Heads because of this name. Also, relatives travelling from afar to visit crash victims would depart the train at Nambucca Heads, only to find no hospital there.
However, changes again, and it once again was known as Macksville District Hospital.
