Returning after a season of basketball with his son, Steve Cumming (12 handicap) topped the A grade after a round of 36 points. Following in the grade was ever consistent Phil Mander (11) with 34 points.
Taking out B grade was Peter Fredricks (18) with what Peter said was an average winning round of 35 points – enough to take the countback from Urpo Ylinen (15).
Best in C grade was Don Adams (22) with a 38-point scorecard, the same as Geoff Wilson (31). However Geoff did not produce enough on the back nine to get the nod.
Unlucky golfers on the day were Heather Gray (29) after a round of 37, Aart Hooykaas (31) also in form with 35 points as did Don Wills (33).
Cannot believe some of the scores as the course is in great condition with ample run and the greens playing true – all credit to our greens staff.
Ball rundown for the day went to 30 points with Kerry McCoy and Bruce Berry the only players to collect on 30.
Nearest the pins went to Peter Morriss for the biggest straightest putt on the second. L Laws took the ball on 3, Stu Johnston the newsagents’ hole No.5, again Greg Smith gets his ball on 7, Phil Mander at 8, Michael Harmer took out the pizza at 13, Bruce Berry took Stu’s ball at 15 and Drew Glasson picked up the money shot at 18.
Thursday was a rescue day as one of our players chased his buggy into the water on the 7th. He pulled the buggy out with all onboard salvaged – or so he thought.
Only when he went to drive home did he realise that the keys had come out – so it was back to the spot to hunt them down (all turned out okay in the end).
This only topped off the week as earlier one of our greens staff was a little eager and put the tractor into the dam on the 11th tee.
Best on Thursday’s round was put together by Ted Beaton (16) with a round of 38 and just to show us all, he took out the money shot at 18. Chris Thordike (12) was next with 37 points.
Division 2 was fought out with Bernie Dugdale (19) 36 points and Russell White on 35.
Others to put it together were Peter Bush 34, along Col Wormleaton, Seaton Jones (Newcastle) and Paul Maxwell.
The ball rundown went to 31 with four to collect: Joe Street, Les Mohr, Bruce Berry and Steve Doherty. Mark Blake was on target with his putt on the 2nd to get the stubby holder and again at the 5th, Mark Nugent took the 3rd, Steve Doherty increased his ball tally with the 7th, Steve Misdale the 8th, Col Wormleaton the pizza at 13, and John Hopkins at 15.
Our Top Gun Shootout sponsored by the League and Sports Club is getting down to the wire.
Les Mohr leads on 41, Phil Frost and Lee Fewings on 39, Bernie Dugdale and Robert Reid 38, Stuart Garvey, Paul Ryan and Aart Hooykaas are at 37, Mark McFaul, Chris Tinson and Rod Robertson are on 36 – and there’s plenty of players snapping at their heels.
