They worked at the front line in casualty clearing stations, in hospitals and on hospital ships – see the Australian War Memorial site: www.awm.gov.au/visit/exhibitions/nurses/ww1 for more information about these women.
On Sunday, November 11 the Nambucca Valley will come together in Macksville to commemorate the Centenary of Armistice and among those being remembered at the cenotaph in River Street will be the ANZAC nurses.
In two of Jim McKenna’s horse-drawn carts hung with Red Cross flags, nurses in costume will be transported from where the march will form up near the Shire Chambers.
The commemorations are being organised by the sub-branches of Macksville, Nambucca and Bowraville ex-services clubs, who came together a year ago to plan proceedings.
Chartered buses will bring people from Bowraville, Nambucca Heads and Stuarts Point and there will be wheelchair accessible transport for those who need special care.
Mark the date in your diary now so that you can participate in the last of the commemorations that began with the Centenary of ANZAC in 2015.
