Going into the round, just two competition points separated the combatants, but it was the hosts at North Macksville who came out of the blocks like a bull at a rodeo where the railings were red.
Two to the good in the opening minutes, the Stingers had their game faces on. The contest settled and the Sharks were able to move the ball forward only to be stalled outside the box as the host’s defence was resolute, patient and clever.
When Macksville broke forward, it was fast and precise. Quinton Threadgate goaled from a lightning break and was so dangerous that he served the Sharks a mystery box of uncontrollable ingredients throughout.
The ladder heading into this round:
Brodie Bartlett was typically all skill and power up front, while BJ Melouney was mercury and terrier down the flanks as the Stingers went to break 4-nil ahead, sat in the shade, and promptly nodded off.
On the resumption the Sharks bit with a rude awakening, netting from the spot after a penalty.
Snapped into action, the second half opened up with Woopi adding a second and the Stingers four more.
The Sharks had just 10 men to call upon, symptomatic of a powerful club fielding two teams in the division – and caught amidships between mustering enough for both versus limited minutes for everyone if they consolidated.
