Australia sent 136,000 horses for use by the Imperial Forces and the British and Indian governments. The Australian War Memorial reports that only one of these returned to Australia.
‘At the end of the First World War Australians had 13,000 surplus horses which could not be returned home for quarantine reasons. Of these, 11,000 were sold, the majority as remounts for the British Army in India, and two thousand were cast for age or infirmity.’ (www.awm.gov.au/articles/).
Purple poppies have become a way of honouring these animals.
The Armistice Centenary Committee welcomes purple poppies as part of the commemorations … and adds this to their recent call for crafty people to get busy knitting or crocheting red poppies to be displayed around the Nambucca as a tribute to our 635 local ANZACS.
Patterns are available at all of the RSLs as well as libraries and the Remnant Basket in Macksville. Poppies are already being delivered, including one purple poppy.
Receipt of red and/or purple poppies is required by October 1. Please deliver them to your nearest RSL.
