Gumbaynggirr and Dunghutti elders wound back the clock for the inaugural Talent of the Nations, Masters Netball Tournament held at Kempsey today as part of the NAIDOC Week celebrations.

Monica Inglis was behind the idea of the over-50s tournament, which she hopes will run on a monthly basis to encourage the community to be healthy and active.
“Every year at the NAIDOC celebrations, our elders all attend and sit around and don’t really do anything,” Inglis told the Argus.
“I thought to myself, how can we get them involved and I suggested playing netball to a couple of people and here we are now.
“Everyone is enjoying it, from the players to the spectators.”
The response was great, with hundreds turning up to the netball courts to watch the spectacle.
“A lot of the elders have expressed their interest in starting up other healthy programs such as walking, swimming and other activities,” Inglis said.
“It’s about bringing the community together in a healthy and positive way to make it better for everyone.”
The carnival had four teams compete, two from Kempsey and one each from Nambucca and Macksville.
The eldest competitor was 74-year-old Aunty Val.
The event was proudly sponsored by Ready Mob, NSW Health and Annecto.
