The Nambucca Offshore Fishing Club, (which incorporates beach, rock and estuary fishing) held the July comp last weekend and disappointingly, only a few fish were measured.

Again, the weather forecast was not great for fishing, but the day and ocean conditions turned out to be terrific. It’s a case of dragging the bum out of bed and having a look.
The best catch of the day was four big jewies around the meter mark and close to 20 kilograms each. The fish were taken in 43 metres off Valla and were busting up 20 and 25 kilograms braid. A move up to 40 kilograms mono hand lines pulled these piscatorial freight trains up. The bag limit on mulloway is two per person and they have to be over 70 centimetres. Mindful of the bag limit, the boys said they had to leave them biting.
The $30 voucher for best snapper went to Reg Ryan, the $30 voucher for best bream to Greg Artlett with Bill Cook, Dave Gladman and Brian Bevan weighing in lesser bream and a lone flathead was measured for the overall point score.
The weigh masters’ $50 mystery voucher went to the crew with the big mulloway.
Blackfish are starting to show up in numbers off the VWall and the locals are claiming their patch along the Wall.
I had the boat in the water on Sunday for a bit of maintenance and travelled up stream for a look. There were schools of blackfish and bream scattering from the weed beds as we drove past, so a night time fish might prove fruitful.
While travelling up stream from the Gordon Park boat ramp we encountered a couple of sand banks that pulled us up. Boat captains should be aware of these navigational dangers.
A few nice bream are showing up around the ‘peg’ at Shelley Beach. Again, a late afternoon or night fish off the rocks or the sand should produce a feed.
A big thank you goes to those club members who volunteered their time to assist the teachers at the Frank Partridge VC School with part of their NADOC week activities. It’s these kids who will be our future members and drivers in the club.
